West Virginia 811

from Brandon Hahn

In this new day and age, the number of buried facilities has grown exponentially in the last 10 years. We are seeing more and more pipes go in the ground. That is why pipeline safety is so important, whether you are digging on your own property or working as a contractor. Pipeline safety is everyone’s responsibility. Over the last 10 years, PHMSA (Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration) has reported over 600 incidents involving pipeline strikes that had injuries and/or fatalities. Not to say all of those could have been avoided but maybe some could have. Every time a bucket, shovel, or any other digging apparatus breaks the plain of the earth, you must have an 811 ticket called in. Not only is it a law in West Virginia, it’s the right thing to do. Over the last couple years, the WVDPB has vigorously worked at getting the education, the know-how, and help, to not only the residents of West Virginia, but to any and all contractors who work in our great state. We have already kicked off this year with training classes to help educate on the correct knowledge of 811 and the WVDPB, informing homeowners and contractors about their rights and the process when holding those who break the 811 law accountable.

Our goal for WV is zero damages. Will that ever happen? Nobody knows; but there are small things everyone can do. And maybe, just maybe, we can get there. It’s going to take dedication and determination to get it done. If anyone would like more information on how they can do their part in pipeline safety or would like more information on the rules and regulations of WV 811 or WVDPB, I urge you to reach out to us so that we may help you not become a statistic. Be safe, dig safe, call WV 811.
