Every day across Texas, thousands of excavation projects begin with a shared commitment: protect what lies beneath so communities above can thrive. The 811 system exists because of that commitment, built and supported by utility owners who take their responsibility to safeguard critical infrastructure seriously. It’s a model that has prevented countless incidents and continues to serve as the backbone of damage prevention in our state.
At the same time, the environment around us is changing. Texas is growing rapidly, infrastructure is becoming more complex, and expectations for speed and precision continue to rise. The systems and data that have carried us this far are being asked to do more than ever before. This isn’t a shortcoming, it’s a signal. A signal that the next chapter of our industry will require us to build on a strong foundation with even greater clarity and capability.
That’s where GIS and advanced mapping come into focus. Many of our members have already made meaningful investments in geospatial systems, and the progress is real. The opportunity in front of us is to continue that trajectory, enhancing accuracy, improving accessibility, and strengthening integration across the damage prevention process. When mapping data is more precise and more connected, it benefits everyone: locators in the field, contractors on the job site, and ultimately the communities we serve.
Texas811’s role is to support our members in that journey, to help connect the ecosystem, and to ensure that the 811 process continues to evolve alongside the needs of a growing state. As you read this issue, I invite you to consider how continued investment in mapping and data can further strengthen the work you’re already doing.
Because at the end of the day, our shared goal remains the same: protect people, protect infrastructure, and make sure every job starts, and ends, safely.
