Each year, April is recognized nationwide as National Safe Digging Month, and the Damage Prevention Council of Texas took full advantage of the opportunity to reinforce one critical message across the state: Know what’s below, contact 811 before you dig. The DPC of Texas was actively sharing messages on social media, hosting chapter meetings, conducting excavation safety days, and pushing messages through geofencing campaigns in 10 key counties across the state to drive home the message of safe digging.
Throughout the month, the DPC of Texas focused on expanding awareness among homeowners, engaging current members, and reaching new members through educational activities. From in-person events to targeted digital outreach, the goal remained the same—reducing damages to underground infrastructure and keeping our communities safe.
As part of National Safe Digging Month, the DPC of Texas held its signature event, Excavation Safety Day, in Plano on April 28, bringing together contractors, utility operators, locators, municipalities, and industry partners for a day dedicated to safety and collaboration. Attendees heard from knowledgeable speakers and had the opportunity to connect with others in the field who share a commitment to damage prevention. Events like this continue to serve as a cornerstone of the DPC of Texas mission, providing valuable education while strengthening relationships across the industry.
In addition, the DPC of Texas launched a month-long homeowner-focused geofencing campaign designed to reach individuals where they live, shop, and plan home improvement projects. By targeting key locations identified through damage data, the campaign delivered timely reminders about safe digging practices directly to smartphones in those counties. This approach helped extend the reach of National Safe Digging Month beyond traditional industry audiences and into neighborhoods across Texas. The campaign yielded nearly 10 million impressions in ten key counties in the state.
The combination of boots-on-the-ground education and digital outreach proved to be an effective strategy for broadening awareness. While industry professionals play a critical role in safe excavation, educating homeowners is just as important in preventing damages and ensuring everyone understands the importance of contacting 811 before starting any digging project.
The work doesn’t stop just because National Safe Digging Month is over. The DPC of Texas remains committed to providing ongoing education, fostering collaboration, and supporting initiatives that promote safe digging all year. With the continued support of its members, partners, and sponsors, the organization will keep building momentum toward a safer Texas.
