Alabama has reached a defining moment in its effort to close the digital divide. After years of planning, mapping, and funding announcements, broadband expansion has now entered the buildout phase. The task ahead, to deliver reliable, high-speed internet to every corner of the state, is both ambitious and achievable.
From Planning to Progress
Through state and federal programs such as the Alabama Broadband Accessibility Fund (ABAF), the Capital Projects Fund (CPF), the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF), and the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, the state has committed unprecedented resources to broadband development. With the leadership of Governor Kay Ivey, the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), and federal entities, these programs have established a foundation for large-scale connectivity. All of the partners involved in the expansion are also deeply indebted to the Alabama Legislature for its foresight in enabling promises to come to fruition.
Now comes the hard work. As funding turns into construction, broadband providers and government partners must work hand in hand to ensure timely, efficient deployment across Alabama’s diverse terrain.
Industry Partners with Deep Experience
Members of the Alabama Cable and Broadband Association (ACBA) are leading participants in these expansion efforts. Collectively, these companies bring decades of experience building and maintaining broadband networks that already serve much of the state. Through ADECA-administered programs, ACBA members are extending their networks to reach previously unserved and underserved communities. These projects combine hundreds of millions of dollars of private capital with public investment, leveraging existing infrastructure, technical expertise, and operational reliability to deliver long-term results. We are here to stay.
The Buildout Phase: Coordination Is Key
Building new fiber lines, upgrading poles, securing permits, and navigating rights of-way require close coordination among state, county, and municipal governments, as well as utility partners.
